Abstract:

The correct estimation of evapotranspiration is a fundamental step in planning, design and operation of most water resources projects. The dependence on various climatological parameters makes evapotranspiration a stochastic process which can not be adequately described by simpler models. In the present study, the transfer function modeling technique (dynamic regression) is examined as a means for appropriate representation of this inherently dynamic process. It is shown that evapotranspiration can adequately be represented in terms of temperature in a dynamic regression environment. In terms of variance and forecast standard errors, transfer function models give better results than univariate ARIMA models.
