Abstract:

The Princeton Transport Code (PTC) is a quasi-three dimensional groundwater flow and transport code. PTC is implemented using a splitting algorithm that allows the three-dimensional solution to be computed in two steps. This paper reports on a verification study of the code's features conducted to fully document the performance of PTC. Given the unique nature of the splitting scheme, the testing sequence contains problems that test the effects of using non-uniform layer thickness. Both flow and transport are considered. Initial test results show that the PTC algorithm performs well for horizontally flat discretizations. Moreover, in addition to restricting the use to nearly horizontal layers, the discretization should maintain uniform thickness in all layers.
