Abstract:

Nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) are present at numerous hazardous waste sites and are suspected to exist at many more. Due to the numerous variables influencing NAPL transport and fate in the subsurface, a series of laboratory column experiments were conducted to investigate the non-equilibrium interface mass transfer of soluble constituents from a multicomponent NAPL at residual saturations. A comparison was performed between the experimental mass transfer rate coefficient (K) values and the values obtained from an empirical relationship reported by Miller et.al (1990). Empirical K values were very close to experimental values indicating that existing empirical models for Ks are reasonably accurate.
