Abstract:

This paper summarizes a study conducted by the Gabinete da ria de Aveiro (GRIA) for the purpose of proposing planning measures and environmental management policies tailored to the Ria de Aveiro, a coastal lagoon on the western coast of Portugal. The lagoon and its tributaries are characterized in terms of water quality problems brought about by the discharge of industrial as well as domestic effluents into the ecosystem. An effort to foresee possible scenarios of development was done and some speculation about the evolution of the existing resource utilization conflicts was attempted. A number of policies and specific measures produced by the GRIA project are now implemented.
