Abstract:

Bangladesh urgently requires integrated coastal zone management to alleviate chronic resource depletion, overpopulation and widespread poverty on one of the world's most dynamic and disaster prone coastal delta environments. In an attempt to achieve integrated coastal zone management, the 1992 Bangladesh Environment Policy contained a number of coastal and marine management policies and administrative changes to enhance policy implementation. It may be appropriate for the coastal management system detailed in the Bangladesh Environment Policy 1992 to be strengthened by a high-level office for coastal zone management with responsibilities for strategic policy development and for the distribution of coastal management funds. The need to create a central coastal management office in Bangladesh is made more urgent by international pressures for coastal zone management supplied by the Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will require an integrated system of coastal management in Bangladesh by 1997-8.
