Abstract:

The southern coast of Sicily extends for about 230 km and is characterized by five physiographic units, the first of which, from Capo Passero to Capo Scalambri, is made up of a roughly 63 km succession of low rocky coastline and wide sandy beaches. This paper is the initial phase of a programme which aims to divide the area into zones in terms of the textural and evolutive features of the coastal strip; the programme will interact with other factors which in turn determine the landscape (urbanization, antropization etc.). These factors can be used to research suitable sediments for the artificial nourishment of the eroding littorals.
