Abstract:

The Conceicao Lagoon on Santa Catarina Island along the south coast of Brazil constitutes a natural and scenic resource of ecological, economic and scientific value. Due to natural and anthropogenic factors that interfere in its dynamics and biological equilibrium, the vulnerability of its aquatic biota is most evident. The vulnerability of the lagoon is shown through an analysis of the natural processes of critical stress, along with the negative effects of human occupation and management. The authors conclude that a program of continuous monitoring with strict control of contaminating agents must be established to protect the environment. It is suggested that to preserve the environmental quality of the lagoon, it is necessary to look for an efficient hydraulic solution in order to guarantee an adequate rate of water renewal with permanent and effective circulation in the lagoon body, allowing a homogeneous distribution of vital salts and gases for the support and survival of its life forms.
