Abstract:

The growing urban occupation in coastal areas has generated environmental disturbs such as the eutrophication of semi-enclosed water bodies. The Marapendi Lagoon, located at a fast developing urban area in Rio de Janeiro city shows a high degradation level due to sewer discharge in it. This work presents, by the use of parameters such as nitrogen, phosphorus, Secchi depht and chlorophyll a, a characterization of the Marapendi Lagoon trophic level. The relationships used between these parameters were adopted based on former studies concerning other lakes, in order to compare the obtained results. The study proved that Marapendi Lagoon is in an eutrophic to hypertrophic state with some areas presenting distinctive trophic characteristics. Such characteristics indicated strong anthropogenic influence, revealing a differentiated eutrophication along the lagoon related to the banks occupation and their geomorphology.
