Abstract:

It is the intent of this review and discussions to provide state-of-the-art information on one aspect of the issue of environmental impacts associated with small boat navigation, that regarding vessel operation-induced turbidity in shallow coastal environments. The discussion will describe the various ways vessel operation have been shown to generate suspended sediment in the water column, enhance sedimentation, or otherwise increase ambient turbidity. A brief summary is also provided as to what is known about the possible adverse environmental impacts associated with increases in turbidity and sedimentation. Management measures are proposed to assist in avoiding ecologically significant impacts to coastal resources.
