Abstract:

This paper argues that the assumptions of scientific models are often accepted without verification. Examining the use of Hardin's tragedy of the commons model in the management of marine resources, I focus on the mythical elements that have been accepted as scientific facts. Drawing upon the lessons learned from an investigation of the TEDs conflict, I point out how an understanding of fundamental sociological concepts can aid in correcting myths. Implications for management are explored.
