Abstract:

This paper describes a study which shows how a railroad company can ensure receipt of a cost-effective, high-quality aggregate product for ballast by monitoring selected quarry operations. It compares the effects of variations in quarry operations on aggregate quality and unit cost. It includes specific engineering and economic recommendations and the description of a process by which a railroad can evaluate whether or not a source of ballast is economically advantageous.
