A Condition Rating System for Rubble Breakwaters and Jetties

Abstract:

This paper describes one aspect of a series of projects which the U.S. Army Corps of Engineering has undertaken in an effort to improve maintenance management of coastal and navigational structures. At the core of these projects is the development of procedures for more uniformly evaluating and describing and the condition of facilities, and further, the development of methods for expressing the condition of structures (and their parts)numerically, to take best advantage of the benefits available from the use of microcomputers in maintenance management. These procedures are designed to allow the conditions of different structures to be more easily compared and for the condition of the individual structures to be more uniformly tracked over a long time periods. More specifically, this paper briefly describes a condition rating and condition index (CI) system for the breakwaters and jetties of rubble constructions, with either rock or concrete armor units. In this system , ratings and index values are expressed as numbers from 0 to 100 on a standard scale containing seven condition levels.
