Abstract:

Computer-integrated construction (CIC) will provide the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry with improved computer tools and will support an overall trend towards greater integration throughout the industry. This paper identifies two technologies required by CIC: project modeling for representing project information in computers and data standards for communicating information among computers. The IRMA model, an Information Reference Model for AEC, arose from the combined work of several researchers working in the areas of project modeling and data standards for CIC. This paper describes the background, characteristics, and uses of the IRMA model.
