Abstract:

This paper shows how shape grammars can be used to model structural engineering problems. The shape annealing algorithm is then used to synthesize component topologies by bringing analysis into the conceptual design phase. Shape annealing combines the concepts of shape grammars and the stochastic optimization technique of simulated annealing to produce optimally directed design configurations. Application requires a shape grammar that models the characteristics of the design space and an evaluation function on the design.
