Abstract:

Designs in different domains vary in structure, performance and in many other aspects. However, their design purposes can be achieved in a limited number of ways. In this paper, we classify designs by goal achievement. Creative engineering design using between domain analogies becomes easier and feasible when such a classification is represented. We propose a computational model for an emergent design support system in which the analogical reasoning process is based on this classification. The analogical reasoning process is accomplished using the design prototype as the representation.
