Abstract:

Trends in Intelligent Highway-Vehicle Systems (IVHS), specifically Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) technologies are directed toward better integration between intersection controller and central master, and toward innovative uses of detector technologies in gathering system measures of performance. At present, tools for the development and study of ATMS strategies are not available. Recognizing the iterative nature of system prototyping, these tools should support the integrated simulation of both arterial and freeway traffic flow. the simulation of detector data, the examination of alternate communication strategies, the study and development of fault-tolerant systems software, and the construction of hybrid strategies for combining conventional and adaptive traffic control approaches into a unified ATM system.
