Abstract:

This paper examines the application o f intelligent vehicle-highway systems (IVHS) technology to high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) facilities. Current projects are described and potential applications are discussed. As outlined in the paper, combining IVHS technologies with HOV facilities appears to offer numerous benefits related to improving the efficiency of the total transportation system, increasing mobility, reducing congestion, improving air quality, and reducing fuel consumption.
