Abstract:

Good education should foster an awareness of the probabilistic nature of the real world. Insensitivity to, or inability to acknowledge and analyze, uncertainties of this world can lead to bad decisions. Civil engineering systems usually consist of many elements which interact and the determination of the probability and modes of their failure is a complex problem. As a contribution to fulfilling the educational needs a suite of CAL programs has been developed. This paper gives the background and motivation for the development followed by the description and illustration of some of the features of the CAL programs mounted on PCs.
