Civil Engineering Computer Usage Survey

Abstract:

A survey of the members of the Columbia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was conducted. The purpose of the survey was to determine the computer usage of practicing civil engineers in this region. The responses to the survey indicate that computers are becoming an important tool in civil engineering and will continue to be important in the future. Based on the data collected in this survey, it appears that students and educators should focus on a general familiarity with computers and software, including word processing and spreadsheet programs, and methods for evaluating software capabilities and limitations, in addition to a thorough understanding of engineering principles.
