Abstract:

Over a relatively short period of about twenty years, personal computers (PC's) have replaced slide rules in most engineering calculations. PC's are now staple equipment in every engineering office. Most engineers have their own computer on their desk. Complicated engineering calculations can be performed in unprecedented short periods of time. More time is spent evaluating different structural configurations, variations in input parameters, and alternative material types. This is as true for routine structural design of new facilities as it is for seismic retrofit projects. The types of analysis will be described. The use of computers and the types of computer software used will receive special attention.
