Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Computing in Civil and Building Engineering

Abstract:

The nature of design within the professional practice of civil engineering today, combined with the curricular and content requirements for design of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, provide a challenge to instructors attempting to teach design at the undergraduate level. This paper describes an integrated Computer-Aided Instructional System (CAIS) within a Total Design Environment, which the Division of Construction Engineering and Management and the Construction Engineering area of the School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University are currently attempting to implement. The paper will discuss design, development, and implementation issues for the proposed educational environment, including: (1) theoretical framework and justification; (2) brief description of the proposed laboratory configuration and its specific hardware and software components; and (3) anticipated educational impact.
