Abstract:

Road networks usually include a large number of bridges and tunnels. The locations of these bridges and tunnels are decided by the road planner during the design of the road alignment without a deep consideration of the factors that may influence the design of the individual bridges an tunnels. In this paper, a new approach for planning the road network is suggested using a geographic information system and three expert systems for the preliminary design of roads, bridges and tunnels. This integration can improve the design of the total road network.
