Abstract:

This paper briefly summarizes the development of a specialized finite element model capable of predicting the elastic and inelastic behavior of beam-slab type prestressed concrete spread box beam highway bridges. An analytical investigation using the model was conducted to define the overall inelastic flexural response of this type of bridge, to predict the location and mechanisms of material damage initiation and propagation, and to compare the overload characteristics of box beam bridges with those of equivalent bridges designed with prestressed I-beams. Analytical results form the basis for conclusions about the strength and behavior of box beam superstructures in comparison with similar bridges employing prestressed concrete I-beams in both elastic and post elastic load ranges.
