Abstract:

A borehole security plan was developed and is being implemented to address safety, environmental protection and restoration, waste isolation, and security concerns related to boreholes in the area where site characterization studies are being performed by the U.S. Department of Energy at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Over 250 boreholes have been drilled to provide geologic, hydrologic, and seismologic data for assessing the suitability of Yucca Mountain for storage of high-level nuclear waste. Approximately 150 additional boreholes are planned for future investigations. In this paper we describe the existing conditions, objectives, and work program used to secure these boreholes.
