Abstract:

This paper explains the main criteria which are applied as well as measures taken to preserve cladding integrity for the foreseen duration of storage. It discusses in detail the double containment system which supplements the fuel cladding - i.e., a welded tight canister and a tight storage well holding the canister. This systems allows for a greater storage density, resulting in lower storage costs because of the lower number of wells and the lower volume of concrete.
