Abstract:

Duke Power was faced with the problem of using explosives to assist in removing a sensitive, saturated embankment cofferdam supported on a large rock plug. The first phase of the work required blasting at the toe of the cofferdam, whose continued stability was essential to the completion of the project. The final blast consisted of about 20,000 lbs of explosives, which was detonated within a few feet of high tieback walls, concrete slabs and a gated discharge structure. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the design and execution of the blasting operations. Essential to the work was the recognition that concrete structures are capable of withstanding much higher levels of ground vibrations than is commonly held.
