Abstract:

An ambient vibration survey of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was performed. The goal of this survey was to provide field data on the dynamic characteristics of the structure to corroborate the predictions of a dynamic finite element model. The survey produced acceleration data at 17 deck locations over the north half span and at the top of the north tower. From these data, it was possible to identify 20 vertical modes, 9 lateral modes, and 4 lateral-torsional modes. A preliminary dynamic finite element model was also prepared for the bridge. Good agreement was found between the mode shapes and frequencies inferred from the field measurements and those predicted by the finite element model.
