Abstract:

Bonded polyester concrete overlays have been very successful in California in restoring and preserving bridge decks from damage by road salts. The polyester concrete system has been employed since 1983 with very few modifications. Field evaluation of various overlaid bridge decks have bee performed. Placement techniques and physical properties affecting performance of bonded polyester overlays are analyzed. Relationships between successful overlays and laboratory and field quality control testing procedures and standards are discussed. Health and safety aspects and precautions are also included.
