Abstract:

The Bayshore Freeway viaduct is located in the city of San Francisco and serves as a vital transportation link between the Bay Bridge and points south along Highway 101. This structure is to be retrofitted so that it will not suffer significant damage in the event of a major earthquake. This paper describes the seismic retrofit strategy proposed for this viaduct. In a future paper the authors will discuss several related problems that were subsequently encountered in detail.
