Abstract:

Technological and operational issues related to implementing a historical database to support the South Dakota Department of Transportation's current and future pavement management activities are addressed. Representative statewide historical transportation databases are examined for potential direct implementation by South Dakota, and a conceptual client-server relational database design that will provide the required flexibility, extensibility, and functionality is presented. The conceptual design addresses operational and design issues related to data integrity and consistency, provides desk-top microcomputer access to South Dakota's historical highway system information, and provides a basis for future extension to a truly distributed environment that integrates Geographic Information System and mapping databases, as well as highway imaging systems.
