Using Geographic Information Systems for Traffic Control Inventory Management

Abstract:

Present city traffic control inventory systems lack flexibility, user friendliness, and many have become obsolete because they were originally designed in haphazard ways - thus providing poor access to poor quality data. There are many advantages that may derived from the application of geographic information systems (GIS) to the facilities management process. This paper describes work, in progress at North Carolina A&T State University, to examine the use of GIS for city traffic control inventories management programs. The work described in the paper includes assessment of various small computer technologies and development of guidelines that may be used to select that combination of hardware and software that best meets the special needs of city departments of transportation (DOT).
