Abstract:

Shotcrete is one of the essential support elements of tunnels driven according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Whereas originally the NATM was mainly based on experience and was hardly supported by numerical models, apart from experience also numerical analyses have come to play an important role in the design of tunnel linings lately. The acceptance of numerical models in the field of geomechanics and, above all, at the design stage, is undoubtedly due to the new models developed recently, by means of which particularly shotcrete can be modelled in a realistic way. By describing the design work for the shotcrete lining of the U.K. Undersea Crossover on the Channel Tunnel Project the present paper gives an example of a design method highlighting the design of the shotcrete lining.
