Abstract:

Active tunnel Design is a new concept for design, layout of specification and contract, and for construction management of tunnels and underground carverns. Investigations yeild more information with the application of Active Tunnel Design, i.e. forecasts can be made on ravelling and bursting rock. The design study is based on quality of rock according to one or more classification systems with quantification of each class or each range of rock quality, encompassing a certain degree of difficulty of excavation. Bid items are provided for each class and bidders are to give specific time in advance of meters per day and for each class. Using systematic mapping of geology and measuring of relevant rock mechanical features, the rock quality is calculated giving rock class and support, and forms a basis for payment and adjustment of length and construction time. Any Construction Contract based upon Active Tunnel Design has far less payment or construction time related problems.
