Abstract:

X-ray computed tomography (CT scanning) is primarily a medical imaging technique. When applied to marine sediments, it responds predominately to the spatial density distribution within an object and thereby permits 2- and 3-dimensional visualization of internal structures. Examination of a Gulf of Mexico continental shelf sediment sample by CT detected shell fragments, burrows and gas bubbles. CT-derived density estimates are well correlated with estimates of bulk density obtained through traditional methods, except when sediment constituents purposely excluded from traditional sampling, such as shells, are included in the computation of CT density.
