Abstract:

Since ionizing radiation is one of the more technologically advanced forms of energy available to society, it has been applied to a great many activities such as: the sterilization of a wide range of consumer goods; preservation of food; chemical processing of complex materials; and medical diagnosis and therapy techniques. However, using radiation energy to ensure safe water supplies and municipal and industrial wastewater treatment is a relatively new civil engineering application. This committee report, Radiation Energy Treatment of Water, Wastewater and Sludge, is a state-of-the-art summary of need, progress, potential, and problems in the use of radiation energy as a treatment technology of water, wastewater and sludge. It discusses radiation sources with energy at or above ultraviolet light, and the appropriate application for each source type. In addition, the report identifies some of the areas where radiation energy can be used in combination with other water treatment techniques, examines some of the technical issues which would enhance its acceptance, and explores some of the economic constraints to wide-spread application.
