Abstract:

Recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, mainly recovered from used plastic beverage bottles, can be used to produce unsaturated polyester resins. Polymer concrete (PC) and polymer mortar (PM) made with these resins have been investigated for their mechanical, overlay and flexural behavior properties at the University of Texas. Resins based on recycled plastics offer the possibility of a lower source cost of materials for forming useful PC and PM based-products. The recycling of PET in PC and PM would also help solve some of the solid waste problems posed by plastics and save energy.
