Abstract:

The waterfront facilities for the largest of the Navy's new homeports in the Gulf of Mexico were completed in 1990. The project included over 2,500 feet (762 m.) of deep draft bulkhead and an 1,100 foot (335.3 m.) double deck pier. The double deck pier and modified double deck wharf fully separate ship support operations from the utility working platform. The sheet pile/king pile anchored bulkhead was of a unique design and was fully instrumented to provide deflection and stress information during and after construction. Typical information obtained is discussed comparing favorably to design and allowables. Finally, with regard to construction procedures, Title II services (full time designer representative on the construction site) are discussed and the benefits derived noted.
