Abstract:

Presented herein are histories for the planning, design, and construction of the Navy's two newest homeport waterfront facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. Included are the waterfront facilities for the new aircraft carrier pier at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, and the new berthing pier at Naval Station Mobile, Alabama. The Pensacola 1166-foot (355.4m) berthing pier project consisted of the design of pier alterations and utility systems for homeporting the supercarrier USS Kitty Hawk. The project encompassed complete pier replacement, site development (including dredging) and extensive utilities. The construction cost for these facilities was approximately $16.1 million. The Mobile project consisted of a concrete pile-supported 615-foot (187.5m) two-deck general-purpose pier with berths to accommodate two guided missile destroyers and two guided missile frigates, plus 1150 feet (350.5m) of shoreline wharf with berthing facilities for a minesweeper. The project also encompassed site development and utilities. The construction cost for these facilities was approximately $18.5 million.
