Abstract: The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors initiated a study to investigate the feasibility of adding slips along the main channel in Marina del Rey in response to the surplus demand for wet berth slips in the area. A boat traffic analysis methodology was developed for the study which is analogous to the ’level-of-service’ (LOS) concept widely used by traffic engineers. The levels are set based on factors including numbers and sizes of boats, their speed and maneuverability, and channel size or capacity. The resulting levels-of-service for a given condition are an indication of the effects of and impacts on travel speed, interruptions and delays, freedom to maneuver, safety and convenience.
