Abstract:

Disturbances of land due to human and natural causes change the porosity and hydraulic conductivity of the soil. A simulation model of conjunctive surface-subsurface flows can be used to investigate the effects of land disturbance on overland runoff and infiltration. The surface flow is mathematically represented by the Saint-Venant equations whereas the subsurface flow is by the Richards equation. Example simulation results confirm that for a disturbed land with loosened soil, runoff will decrease and infiltration will increase as compared to the originally undisturbed situation.
