Abstract:

The principal objective of the present study was to establish relationships between some easily measurable basin characteristics and seven-day ten-year Low Flow Index, Q7,10. The regional regression equations are developed in this study based on data from 58 streamflow gauging stations of the Italian Hydrologic Service (IHS) in Central Italy spread over an area of about 50,000 Km2. It was observed that these relationships showed evidence of the strong dependence between the Q7,10 index and two important geomorphologic parameters, respectively, Basin Surface Area (AREA) and Base Flow Index (BFI). The latter index, estimated according to the procedure proposed by Lvovitch (1972) is strongly correlated with the geological characteristics of the basins. This has been shown in earlier studies (Manciola & Casadei, 1991). In this regard it is easily estimated also for ungauged sites.
