Abstract:

In recent years, horizontal wells have become an economical water supply source alternative for many shallow water table areas in Florida. Horizontal wells typically utilize 15 to 20 cm diameter perforated recovery pipe installed 4.5 to 6 m below the ground surface. Recently developed installation machinery has made the cost of horizontal wells competitive with other water supply sources. Horizontal wells have been installed as primary water supplies for golf courses, citrus groves, ornamental nurseries, and vegetable farms plus they have been used to remediate contaminated waste sites. This report summarizes uses of the horizontal wells, typical installation methods, and well performance.
