Abstract:

East Drain Terminal Drop Structure is located in East Drain, an open toe drain of Palmetto Bend Dam, in the tide water area of south Texas. The drop structure was threatened by piping erosion. The structure was stabilized by buried pipe drains along its flanks and a protective filter at its base. Designs for these drainage facilities were based on the same criteria as are agricultural drains constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation). Analysis of the soil piping problem and structure modifications are discussed.
