Abstract:

The paper summarizes the current status of an ongoing study on the postbuckling behavior of thick and moderately thick composite stiffened shells. Axially compressed moderately thick panels are studied using both the classical plate theory (CPT) and first order Shear Deformation Theory (SDT) to bring out the effect of shear deformation. Thick closed circular cylindrical shells under hydrostatic pressure are examined using a three-dimensional elasticity approach. An asymptotic approach coupled to p-version finite elements is employed in the analysis. Some results for critical loads, imperfection-sensitivity and interlaminar stresses are presented.
