Concrete-Faced RCC Dams

Abstract:

In the past 10 years, roller compacted concrete (RCC) has gained wide acceptance as a cost effective material for constructing and rehabilitating dams. Since the first RCC dams had seepage problems, designers have developed a number of different approaches to waterproofing, without one gaining complete acceptance. One such waterproofing approach is the concrete-faced RCC dam. Modern techniques used for concrete-faced rockfill dams were adapted for use on RCC. This paper describes the RCC spillways at S.W. Freese and Lake Alan Henry Dams. Details on the RCC sections, construction procedures, and material properties at S.W. Freese Dam were outlined. Also included are modifications made for the Lake Alan Henry Dam, and a tabulation of the RCC and facing costs for comparisons to other projects.
