Abstract:

A contractor's view of RCC dam construction is presented. It begins with the principal construction elements and the challenge created by their interrelationships. Men and equipment selection, and their use are discussed in terms of availability, suitability and cost. Construction success depends upon thorough project evaluation and factors that affect intensity and placement rate. The human factor is developed by considering labor efficiency and the RCC learning curve. Recognizing that every project has a learning curve, what is its impact on cost, schedule and quality? The benefit derived by having an experienced team is clearly shown for projects with relatively short dam-placement durations. Another element to be discussed is design constructibility; what considerations should be given or what questions should be asked during the development of various design details and specifications?
