Abstract:

The paper traces the development of roller compacted concrete (RCC) dams in South Africa, and in particular the application to arch/gravity dams. The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry of the Republic of South Africa, has now designed and constructed two RCC arch/gravity dams: Knellpoort Dam and Wolwedans Dam - the first of their type in the world, with heights of 50 m and 70 m respectively. The philosophy of design, the mixes, construction methods, instrumentation, and the results of the observation of the dams are covered.
