Abstract:

Miel II Dam is a 141 m high RCC structure designed for the tropical mountains of central Columbia. Interesting features are its height (considerably higher than any existing RCC Dam), heavy and frequent rainfall during construction, the very narrow valley, and the requirement for an all conveyor RCC delivery system. Conventional methods for the design of gravity dams were used, with special consideration given to properties of the RCC and its joints, influence of the canyon, methods for achieving watertightness, moduli of the foundation rock, rain conditions and the available materials. Intensive studies have been undertaken to obtain optimum mixtures for the RCC and to define the short and long term engineering properties of these mixtures. Available data and careful estimates established probable mix designs with their projected properties. This allowed design, specifications, and bid documents to progress to early essential completion. Adjustments will be implemented if appropriate after the completion of the testing program. The RCC contract should be awarded in early 1992. The speed of RCC removes the dam from the critical path of the total project. If necessary, the dam could be delayed without effecting project completion because tunnelling and procurement of powerhouse equipment will take longer than construction of the dam.
