Abstract:

The paper describes the site conditions, design and proposed construction methods for the 115 m high Pangue Dam, Chile's first RCC dam. Trial mix design work and test embankments constructed to investigate the use of various local materials, are also presented. Investigations include compaction by dozer tracking and RCC placement during rainfall intensities up to approximately 12 mm/hour to enable the RCC to be placed through the wet winter period. The resulting RCC must meet the strength requirements imposed by static, thermal and seismic loads.
