Abstract:

Avalon Harbor, which is located on the southeast side of Catalina Island approximately 25 miles (40 km) off the coast of Southern California, is an excellent example of a destination harbor for pleasure craft. Avalon's success is due to its convenient location, efficient harbor operations, effective two point mooring system, and aesthetic appearance. This paper examines the factors which have resulted in Avalon Harbor's success. Proximity to home ports is studied, as well as harbor operations and mooring methods. The harbor conditions during the past are reviewed to show why the no waste discharge policy was instituted. Harbor amenities are discussed to illustrate how all of the factors presented above are interrelated and why these relationships have yielded such a pleasant destination harbor.
